"I don't, but I would see it done correctly, else you will lose your advantage," he said tightly. Although he held her capabilities in respect, Simon did not trust this operation to her motley band of archers. "Where are you staying? I will go with you now."

The usually unflappable outlaw looked positively flustered by his intention, and Simon realized that she still did not trust him. The knowledge disgusted him, for had he not taken a leap of faith to believe in her?

He expected no less from her, and his mouth hardened into a grim line as she kept her distance. He was aware of the deepening dark and the nearby trees, and he put a hand to the hilt of his sword, lest her minions catch him unprepared.

"I would supervise this myself, wench, if not with your miners, then with men of my own choosing," he said through gritted teeth. He would take Ansquith for his brother and fie on the wretched female!

His threat obviously alarmed her, though she was swift to hide it, the deceitful creature. "Tomorrow," she said, backing away toward the forest. "Meet me in the glade."

Annoyance at this constant skulking and hiding made him reach for her, but she moved too swiftly, disappearing like a dream beneath the darkness of the trees. Startled by the abruptness of her departure, Simon grunted in disappointment at her defection. He would share no rabbit or berth with her tonight.

"Fie on you, then! You will get yourself killed!" he warned, for the chase held myriad dangers to threaten one lone female in men's clothing. For a moment, Simon considered going after her, but his pride protested loudly. Bah! What did he care what happened to her? he thought, turning back to the road.

Annoying, feckless female! He should not be concerned about her or her lost heritage or the reckless risks she took parading about in disguise and wandering through the night woods.

Striding away determinedly, Simon vowed to ignore the pain in his chest, which had naught to do with his frustration. Undoubtedly, as Florian would confirm, it was caused by his poor eating habits. And not Bethia.
